Second Baby Giraffe At Chester Zoo
Keepers at Chester Zoo are celebrating the arrival of a second baby giraffe in only two months as baby Rothschild Niamh was born on Monday, following the birth of Margaret in January - the first Rothschild born at the zoo.
Margaret, born in January, Margaret was the smallest giraffe ever born at the Zoo though is now going from strength to strength, hand-reared by keepers. New arrival Niamh is being reared by her mother, Kelly and fathered by seven-year-old Thorn. Niamh is the second giraffe born to Kelly and brings the number of giraffes at Chester Zoo up to seven.
Native to Kenya and Uganda the plight of the Rothschild giraffe in the wild is severe with only 600 remaining in the wild.
Chester Zoo's Curator of Birds and Mammals, Mike Jordon stated: "We have an excellent track record when it comes to our giraffe breeding programme, which is all the more important when you consider that Rothschild's giraffes are so scarce in the wild." Jordon went on to state that to "have two youngsters just a couple of months apart is very special and I am sure they will be delighting our visitors in no time at all."
