Debut for Small Giraffe
The first female Rothschild giraffe born at Chester Zoo is also one on of the smallest giraffes ever born at the Zoo. Despite her small start, the pint-sized Margaret will grow into one of the tallest animals at the Zoo.
Margaret is the first calf born to her mother, six-year-old Fay, and was born two weeks early. The premature giraffe weighed in at a low 34 kilos and stands only 5ft tall - very small for a giraffe. Margaret is being hand-reared by dedicated keepers after she was having difficulty suckling from her mother.
Team leader of the Giraffes section, Tim Rowlands stated: "Margaret is potentially one of the smallest giraffe calves we have ever seen. Fay isn't the largest of giraffes and Margaret was also early which might go some way to explaining her size." Tim Rowlands went on to point out that the Zoo has "a good track record when it comes to breeding giraffes and we are delighted to welcome another to the fold."
